How does screen printing work, and where does it fail?
Screen printing pushes ink through a stencil mesh onto the frame. The equipment is inexpensive and the process needs little operator training, which is why it is the cheapest way to get a multi-color dealership logo onto a frame.
It fails in two places. First, surface: screen printing is economical on flat substrates and limited by how complex the surface is, so contoured frame faces are awkward. Second, wear: the ink sits on top rather than being integrated into the material, so it is less durable than a mark made by removing or deforming the substrate.
None of that makes it the wrong choice. If your logo is three colors and your frames are consumables on a lot, screen printing is exactly right. If the frame goes out on a delivered truck in Minnesota, be realistic about how the ink will look in year four.
What does laser etching give you that ink cannot?
Permanence and precision. Laser engraving removes material to create the design, so there is no topical ink to wear or fade. The mark is the geometry of the part. It also holds far finer detail than a screen can — small type, thin strokes, tight logo elements.
The cost is color. Etching gives you the tone of the exposed substrate against the surrounding finish. On black powder-coat that contrast is excellent. On polished chrome it is subtler and depends on lighting.
Etching is also directional in a way printing is not. Laser work follows vector paths, which is why suppliers ask for vector artwork — the machine traces outlines rather than interpreting a grid of pixels.
When is embossing worth the setup cost?
When you are ordering enough units to amortize the tooling and you want the mark to be structural. Embossing molds your design onto a die and stamps it into the frame under pressure, so the branding is part of the metal, not a coating on it.
Embossing outlasts every other method here, which is the whole argument for it. The tradeoffs are real: you get relief and no color, detail is limited by what the die can hold, and the setup cost means small runs are expensive per frame.
It is the right choice for a dealership that has used the same simple mark for years and expects to keep using it. It is the wrong choice for anyone whose branding is in flux, because the tooling is committed.
Where does pad printing fit?
Pad printing is the answer when you need color on a surface that is not flat. It picks ink out of an etched plate with a silicone pad and transfers it onto convex, concave or textured surfaces, which is why the automotive industry uses it to decorate interior components.
Its inks are also better than a generic surface print. Pad printing inks contain adhesive agents and typically cure to a hardened epoxy-like film, giving strong adhesion and abrasion resistance across plastics, metals and treated or untreated substrates.
Practically, that makes pad printing the middle option: closer to screen printing on color and cost, closer to etching on durability. If your frame face has any contour and your logo has color, this is usually the method to ask about.
What artwork do you need for each method?
Vector for anything laser or embossed, and vector preferred for printing too. Vector files scale without softening, which is why screen printers, embroiderers and laser engravers all ask for them. Raster files work for printing only if the resolution is high enough at final print size.

If you only have a raster logo, supply it at the intended print size at 300 DPI where you can; 200 DPI is a practical floor for general print work. How does each method age on a car that lives outdoors?
Printed marks fade and abrade first, because the ink is a surface layer exposed to UV, road grit and repeated washing. Etched and embossed marks do not fade at all — what changes around them is the surrounding finish, not the mark itself.
That distinction decides the method for long-life applications. On a frame that goes out on a delivered vehicle and stays there for years, a printed logo is the component with the shortest service life. On a lot frame replaced every few months, it never becomes the limiting factor at all.
Pad printing sits between the two and is underrated for this reason: its inks contain adhesion promoters and cure to a hard, abrasion-resistant film rather than sitting soft on the surface. If you need color on a frame that has to last, it is the best available compromise.
Which method should you pick for a multi-color dealership logo?
Printing, and specifically pad printing if the surface is contoured. Etching and embossing are single-tone processes; forcing a multi-color logo through either means simplifying it to one shape, which usually means it stops looking like your logo.
The alternative is to accept the simplification deliberately. Many dealership logos have a strong single-color mark hiding inside them, and etched into black powder-coat that mark can look better than the full-color original ever did on a frame this small.
