Metal frames last longer and read as premium. Plastic frames cost less per unit and are easier to hand out by the case. For most dealerships the right answer is both: plastic on lot inventory and giveaways, metal on delivered vehicles. Neither material is universally better, and a supplier who tells you otherwise is selling, not advising.
Should dealership license plate frames be plastic or metal?
Choose metal when the frame goes on a car the customer keeps for years. Choose plastic when the frame goes on lot inventory, gets swapped constantly, or when unit cost decides how many you can afford to buy. The two materials are not competing for the same job.
A frame on a sold vehicle is a multi-year marketing asset. S&P Global Mobility put the average age of light vehicles on US roads at 12.8 years in 2025, with passenger cars averaging 14.5 years. If your frame fades or cracks in year two, it comes off the car long before the car comes off the road.
A frame on lot inventory lives a different life: weeks or months, moved between vehicles, exposed to whatever the weather does to an open lot. That is a consumable. Paying metal prices for a consumable is a bad trade.
How do plastic and metal license plate frames compare?
Metal wins on lifespan, finish range and perceived value. Plastic wins on unit cost, weight and shipping. Plastic cannot rust; metal cannot go brittle under UV. Everything else is a detail underneath those four facts.

When is plastic the better choice for a dealership?
Plastic wins whenever the frame is temporary, high-volume, or free. Lot inventory, service loaners, community event handouts, and anything a porter installs and removes repeatedly all favor plastic. So does any campaign where doubling the quantity matters more than doubling the lifespan.
Plastic also has a genuine technical advantage nobody advertises: it will never rust into the mounting holes. On a salt-belt lot, a cheap plated steel frame can bleed rust down a bumper in one winter. A plastic frame simply will not do that.
Weight matters more than dealers expect. Plate frames ship by the case, and metal frames turn a large order into a freight problem. If you are shipping frames between rooftops in a group, plastic is materially cheaper to move.
When does metal justify the extra cost?
Metal earns its price on delivered vehicles, on premium and truck brands, and anywhere the frame has to survive years of weather. It also earns it when the frame is part of the delivery experience rather than a giveaway. A customer who unwraps a chrome frame keeps it; one handed a thin plastic frame often does not.
The durability difference is structural, not cosmetic. Metal frames fail by losing finish. Plastic frames fail by degrading as a material. ABS, the common plastic in automotive-adjacent parts, contains a butadiene phase that photo-oxidizes under UV, which shows up first as yellowing or dulling and later as reduced impact strength and surface crazing. UV stabilizer packages such as HALS slow this down considerably, but they do not stop it.
If your frames go on trucks in Arizona or convertibles in Florida, that difference is not theoretical. It is the difference between a frame that looks intentional in year five and one that looks abandoned.
Which material holds a dealership logo better?
Plastic accepts printed color more cheaply; metal accepts more decoration methods. If your logo is multi-color and detailed, printed plastic can reproduce it at lower cost. If you want engraving, embossing or a finish that ages well, you need metal.
Printed ink on either substrate is a surface layer, and surface layers wear. Laser etching and engraving remove material instead of adding it, so there is no ink to rub off or fade. That option only exists on metal.
The practical consequence: a two-color dealership logo on plastic is fine and cost-effective. The same logo etched into black powder-coat will still be legible when the plastic version has gone chalky. Choose based on how long the frame needs to look new. How does your climate change the answer?
Salt belt favors well-finished metal or plastic over cheap plated steel. High-UV desert and coastal sun favor metal. Humid coastal air favors stainless or a properly powder-coated substrate. The failure mode changes by region, and so should your spec.

Corrosion claims in this category are usually vague. If a supplier quotes corrosion performance, ask which standard they tested to. ASTM B117, the standard practice for operating salt spray apparatus, exposes samples to a continuous fog of roughly 5% sodium chloride at 35 degrees Celsius and is the common US benchmark. A number without a standard behind it is marketing.
Do plastic or metal frames cause more plate-visibility problems?
Material is irrelevant to legality; geometry is what matters. What gets a driver ticketed is a frame border that covers the state name, the registration sticker, or any character on the plate. A thick plastic frame and a thick metal frame are equally illegal.
The rules vary by state and they are being tightened, not loosened. California Vehicle Code section 5201 requires plates to be mounted so that all characters remain clearly visible and legible, and prohibits coverings that obscure the plate. North Carolina treats a frame that covers the state name, any letter or number, or the registration sticker as a violation. Kansas passed a law in 2026 specifically targeting frames that obscure the state name, plate number or tags.

What should you order if you only want one frame?
Order metal. A single-SKU dealership is almost always optimizing for the delivered vehicle, and that is the job metal does better. Accept that you will use an expensive frame on lot cars, or use blank plastic holders on the lot and reserve branded metal for delivery.
The two-SKU approach is usually cheaper in practice even though it looks more complicated on paper. Cheap plastic on the lot, branded metal at delivery, and you stop losing good frames to inventory turnover.
