Why Did Our Logo Print Blurry on the Plate Frames?

A blurry printed logo almost always comes from the source file, not the printing process. The two causes are a raster image with too little resolution for its printed size, or a vector file that got flattened or exported poorly. Check the file type first — it tells you which problem you have.

What's the difference between a vector logo and a raster logo?

A vector file (SVG, AI, EPS) stores a logo as mathematical shapes and curves, so it can scale to any size — a business card or a billboard — with perfectly sharp edges. A raster file (JPG, PNG) stores a logo as a fixed grid of pixels, so it only looks sharp at the size and resolution it was created for.

Why does a logo pulled from a website look blurry when printed?

Logos saved from a website — a screenshot, a right-click "save image," or a favicon — are built for screens, which display at roughly 72–96 pixels per inch. Print reproduction generally needs far more pixel density than that to look sharp at close range, so a screen-resolution image enlarged to frame size shows visible pixelation, soft edges, and fuzzy text.

The fix is going back to the original design file — the one a designer or print shop used, not the version compressed for the web — or requesting a vector version from whoever created the logo originally.

Why does a logo look fine on my screen but blurry once printed?

Screens and printed surfaces show resolution differently. A low-resolution image can look acceptable on a screen because the screen itself has a limited pixel density and because on-screen viewing distance and zoom level hide softness that becomes obvious once the same image is enlarged and printed onto a physical object viewed up close.

This is why a live preview at actual print scale — like the one in the builder — catches problems that a quick glance at a thumbnail won't.

Why do small text elements in a logo blur out first?

Fine detail — thin letter strokes, small taglines, intricate line work — needs more resolution to reproduce cleanly than large solid shapes do, because there are fewer pixels available to define each thin line. A logo that looks acceptable as a big block shape can still turn its slogan text into an illegible smear at the same resolution.

JPG compression makes this worse. JPG files use lossy compression that introduces soft, blocky artifacts around hard edges — most visible exactly where a logo has fine text or a thin outline. A PNG of the same logo, at the same resolution, will usually hold detail better because PNG compression doesn't degrade edges the same way.

Why does a logo look sharp in an email or PDF but blurry once uploaded?

Documents like PDFs and email attachments can embed a logo at its full original resolution even while displaying it small on your screen, which hides a resolution problem until the same file is enlarged for a physical product. What you're seeing in that document is the file rendered small; what a frame needs is that same file enlarged, and enlargement is exactly where a marginal file's limitations become visible.

Don't judge a logo file's suitability by how it looks embedded in a document at a small display size. Judge it by opening the image itself at 100% zoom, or larger, and looking at the actual pixel detail.

Does a logo with fine gradients or photographic detail cause its own problems?

Yes, separately from resolution. Screen printing and similar solid-color processes reproduce flat areas of color cleanly but struggle with smooth photographic gradients and fine tonal blending, which can print as visible banding or lose detail regardless of how high-resolution the source file is. A logo built as a photograph or a complex gradient illustration is a different problem than a low-resolution logo — it's a design compatibility issue with the printing method, not a file quality issue.

Logos built from solid shapes, flat color fills, and clean typography reproduce most reliably across every finish and material. If your logo includes photographic elements or complex shading, it's worth asking whether a simplified version exists specifically for merchandise and signage use — many brand style guides include one for exactly this reason.

How do I check if my logo file is good enough before uploading?

If you have an SVG, AI, or EPS version, use it — resolution stops being a question entirely. If you only have a PNG or JPG, open it at 100% zoom on your screen and look at the fine detail: if edges look soft or jagged at that size already, they will look worse enlarged onto a frame. As a rule of thumb, the larger the original pixel dimensions of the file, the more safely it can be enlarged.

When in doubt, ask whoever designed your logo — a marketing agency, sign shop, or your original branding vendor — for the vector master file. Most professionally designed logos have one on file even if it was never sent to you.

What resolution should a raster logo file actually be?

General print industry practice calls for a meaningfully higher pixel density than screen images use — commonly cited around 300 pixels per inch at the final printed size, well above the roughly 72–96 pixels per inch typical of web images. A logo saved at screen resolution and then stretched to fill a frame is being asked to cover far more physical area than it has pixels to support.

The practical test matters more than the exact number: open the file at the size it will actually print, not a shrunk-down thumbnail, and look closely at edges and fine lines. If a file is borderline, a vector version removes the question entirely, since scaling stops being a resolution problem at all.

Why does a logo that looks sharp on a business card still look blurry on a frame?

Enlargement factor is the difference. A logo sized correctly for a small printed item like a card or letterhead may need to be enlarged substantially to fill a plate frame's top or bottom text area, and every bit of enlargement spreads the same fixed number of pixels over more physical space. The same raster file can look perfectly sharp at one size and visibly soft at a larger one, because the pixel density at the final size is what actually determines sharpness, not how the file looked at its original size.

This is exactly why vector files don't have this problem — there's no fixed pixel grid being stretched, so the same file prints sharp whether it's sized for a business card or a much larger surface.
