Take landed cost per frame - unit price plus setup, artwork and freight, divided by quantity - and that is your cost per vehicle, because one frame goes on one car. At published dealer-supply rates that lands near $1.40-$2.00 for screen-printed plastic, $2.80-$3.60 for mid-tier printed frames, and $11 and up for laser-etched stainless.

How does that compare to what a dealership already spends per car?
NADA's 2025 data put average dealer advertising spend at $739 per new vehicle retailed, up $34 year over year, with the average store spending $586,246 a year on advertising. A $1.50 frame is 0.2% of the per-unit ad budget. A $12 metal frame is 1.6%.
That framing matters when you are defending the line item. The question is almost never whether frames are affordable - they obviously are. The question is whether you have chosen the right material for the vehicles you deliver, and whether you keep enough stock that no car leaves without one.
The expensive failure in this category is not overspending. It is buying too few frames, running out mid-quarter, and delivering unbranded cars for six weeks.
How long does one frame keep working?
Longer than any other line on the marketing budget, because it leaves with the car. Where a search ad stops the second the budget stops, a plate frame keeps working for as long as the owner keeps the vehicle and the frame survives the weather.
S&P Global Mobility reported in May 2025 that the average age of vehicles in operation in the US hit 12.8 years, with passenger cars at 14.5 years and light trucks at 11.9. Total vehicles in operation reached 289 million against a 4.5% scrappage rate. Vehicles are staying on the road, and so is whatever is bolted to the plate.
Two honest caveats. Not every frame stays on - some owners remove them, and some are replaced at resale. And a frame that fails visually gets removed early, which is the whole argument for spending more on material where it matters.
How do you calculate your own cost per vehicle?
Use landed cost, not the quoted unit price. Suppliers that publish low per-frame numbers sometimes recover it in setup and screen charges, and freight on metal is not trivial.
- Unit price x quantity ordered.
- Add one-time setup, screen, plate or artwork fees. Published examples in this category run from $0 to $200.
- Add freight.
- Divide the total by the number of frames.
- Add roughly 10% for damaged, remade and unaccounted frames if you want a realistic number.
Example using published rates: 500 screen-printed plastic frames at $1.53 each is $765. Add a $45 screen charge of the kind Park Place Printing publishes and, say, $60 freight, and landed cost is $870, or $1.74 per frame. That is your cost per delivered vehicle.
Should you count service and loaner vehicles in the per-vehicle math?
Yes, and doing so usually improves the case. Loaners, shuttles, porter cars and employee vehicles are driven far more miles per year than a typical retail unit and stay in your local market. A frame on a loaner works for years within a few miles of the store.
Include them in your quantity planning and treat their frames as a separate, higher-durability purchase. These are the vehicles where a metal frame earns its premium most clearly, because they are exposed to weather and car washes constantly and are never sold away from your trade area.
Does a cheaper frame lower your cost per vehicle?
On paper, immediately. In practice, only if it survives. Cost per vehicle is a one-time number; cost per year of visible branding is the number that determines whether the spend worked. A frame removed after two years cost more per year of exposure than a better frame that lasted ten.

Plastic still wins on pure cost per year in that comparison. What it does not win is the impression made at delivery on a premium vehicle, which is a real business consideration that no cost-per-year table captures. Decide on both axes, not one.
What happens to the cost if the customer removes the frame?
You lose the exposure but not much money, which is the honest way to frame the risk. A removed plastic frame costs you a dollar or two. A removed metal frame costs ten or twelve. Neither is a material loss against NADA's reported $739 average ad spend per new vehicle retailed - but the pattern is worth reducing.
Removal is usually a design problem, not a customer problem. Frames get taken off when they look cheap, when the branding is loud enough to feel like a bumper sticker, or when they physically obscure the plate. A restrained frame with the dealership name and city, on a material that matches the vehicle, stays on far longer than an aggressively branded one.
Design for the frame to be kept. Keep the text short, keep it legible at plate distance, and put a better material on vehicles whose owners will notice a worse one.
How do you present this number to a GM or controller?
Present it per delivered vehicle, never as a lump sum. "$1.74 per delivered vehicle" is a sentence that gets approved. "$1,740 for license plate frames" invites a conversation about whether frames are necessary, which is not a conversation worth having over a fraction of a percent of the ad budget.
- State landed cost per frame, with the setup and freight already inside it.
- State it as a percentage of your own per-unit advertising cost, or against NADA's reported $739 average if you do not track your own.
- State the quantity as months of coverage, not as a raw number: "500 frames is nine months."
- Ask for it as a fixed per-delivery cost rather than a discretionary ad line, so it scales down automatically in a slow month instead of being cut.
That framing also settles the material argument. Once the number is per vehicle, upgrading premium inventory to metal is visibly a few dollars per car, not a budget event.
