Chrome vs Black Powder-Coat vs Pewter: Frame Finishes

Black powder-coat is the most forgiving finish for most dealerships: it hides dirt, holds up mechanically, and works with almost any logo. Polished chrome looks the most expensive and shows the most wear. Standard chrome is the safe default. Antique pewter is a niche choice that is excellent for the brands it fits and wrong for everyone else.

Which finish should a dealership pick for its license plate frames?

Match the finish to the vehicles you deliver, not to your logo. Chrome finishes pair with chrome trim and traditional badging. Black powder-coat pairs with blacked-out trim packages, trucks and modern lineups. Antique pewter suits heritage, luxury and specialty dealers. Getting this wrong is more visible than any durability difference.

Most dealerships need one finish, occasionally two. Running four is inventory management you do not need. If you sell one brand, pick the finish that matches that brand's current trim direction and stop there.

How do the four common frame finishes compare?

Chrome and polished chrome are electroplated layers. Powder-coat is a cured polymer film. Antique pewter is a darkened, low-lustre metallic look. That difference in how the finish is applied drives everything about how each one wears.

What is the difference between standard chrome and polished chrome?

Both are electroplated; polished chrome gets more surface preparation before plating, which is what produces the deeper mirror. The plating stack itself is similar. You are paying for the substrate finishing work, not for more chromium.

Decorative chrome is a layered system, not a single coating. Automotive-style triple chrome plating lays down copper to fill microscopic surface imperfections, then nickel — often in multiple sub-layers — which carries most of the corrosion protection, and finally a thin chromium layer that provides the hard, bright, tarnish-resistant surface.

The practical consequence for a dealer: chrome failure almost always starts where that layer stack is thinnest or has been breached, which in a plate frame means the mounting holes and any stamped edge. Polished chrome does not fail differently, it just shows every stage of the process more clearly.

How does black powder-coat actually hold up?

Well, and for a reason worth knowing. Powder coating applies a dry polymer electrostatically and then cures it into a continuous film, so it goes on far thicker than sprayed liquid paint. That thickness is where the chip and scratch resistance comes from.

Typical powder coat film thickness runs roughly 60 to 120 microns, about 2.4 to 4.7 mils, with 1.5 to 5.0 mils achievable on cold parts in a single pass. Thermosetting powders, which account for the large majority of powder coatings in use, cure into a heat-stable film that will not re-melt, and they adhere better to metal and resist solvents better than thermoplastic equivalents.

The tradeoff is repair. A chipped chrome frame looks tarnished; a chipped black frame shows bright metal underneath, which is more obvious at a glance. In exchange, black powder-coat hides road film, brake dust and general lot grime better than any chrome finish will.

When does antique pewter make sense?

Antique pewter works when your brand is not trying to look new. Heritage marques, classic and specialty dealers, powersports, and luxury stores whose trim has moved away from bright chrome all read correctly in pewter. On a mainstream volume lot it reads as a mismatch.

Its underrated advantage is how it ages. A bright chrome frame looks worse as it wears because the reference point is a mirror. A darkened, low-lustre finish absorbs wear into its own character. If you deliver vehicles that stay in a family for a decade, that matters.

Its real limitation is contrast. Pewter is a mid-tone, so a mid-tone logo disappears into it. Plan the artwork and the finish together, not in sequence.

Which finish gives a dealership logo the best contrast?

Black powder-coat gives the widest usable range: white, silver, and most brand colors read cleanly against it. Chrome finishes need dark or saturated artwork because light-colored text vanishes against a mirror. Antique pewter needs high-contrast artwork in either direction.

Which finish survives road salt and coastal air best?

A cured powder-coat film over a properly prepared substrate is generally the most forgiving in salt and humidity, because it is continuous and thick. Electroplated finishes depend on the integrity of the plating stack, and any breach gives corrosion a path to the base metal.

Substrate matters as much as finish. Stainless resists corrosion because chromium in the alloy forms a passive chromium oxide layer; plated steel has no such defense once the plating is compromised. If you are in the salt belt or on the coast, ask about the base metal before you ask about the finish.

Treat any specific corrosion claim with skepticism unless it names a test. ASTM B117 salt spray, using a roughly 5% sodium chloride fog at 35 degrees Celsius, is the standard US practice for this kind of comparison. Coatings with uniform, pore-free structures perform better; ones with micro-cracks or porosity fail earlier because corrosive agents penetrate those pathways.

Which finish is easiest to keep looking clean?

Black powder-coat, by a wide margin. Its matte-to-satin surface hides road film, brake dust and water spots that a mirror finish advertises. Polished chrome is the hardest to keep presentable, because every fingerprint and swirl mark shows up in the reflection.

This matters most on the lot, where nobody is detailing plate frames between showings. A row of inventory wearing black frames still looks deliberate after a week of weather. The same row in polished chrome looks neglected, and shoppers read that as a signal about the store.

On a delivered vehicle it matters less, because the customer washes the car. If your frames spend months outdoors before the vehicle sells, weight this factor heavily. If they go straight onto sold cars, weight brand fit instead.

How many finishes should one dealership stock?

One, in most cases. Two if you run distinct brands or a separate pre-owned identity under the same roof. Four is a stocking problem disguised as choice, and split volume pushes every SKU into a worse price tier.
